Club 33

by Tyler Gant

Recently, I had the opportunity to dine at the uber-exclusive Club 33. If you don’t know what this is, then let me explain. It is a private restaurant inside Disneyland at Anaheim. The only way to get a table is to have a reservation, and the reservation list is years long. It’s difficult to get in anytime soon unless you know someone who knows someone. I was invited by a friend who knows that someone.

The restaurant is located in the New Orleans section of Disneyland. It’s only distinction is a nondescript door with a small number 33 next to it. There are many who think that this restaurant is the one you see when you are on the Pirates ride, but this is not true. That restaurant is known as the Blue Bayou, and its entrance is next to that small nondescript door that takes you to a secret, second floor known as Club 33.

When you ring the doorbell, a young woman appears. She holds a clipboard. She asks you for your name as she grasps the clipboard tight to her bosom. When the right name is revealed with the appropriate number of guests, she lets you enter a small foyer. A staircase is in front of you, as is a small glass elevator. It’s up to you if you decide to take the elevator.

When you reach the second floor you turn left into a long hallway; one side is completely mirrored with a long table of presented wines, the other is a row of windows adorned in lace and velvet curtains. At the end of this hallway is the dining room, draped in wallpaper, laces, paintings and gilded window frames that remind one of the antebellum. When you are seated, and the menu presented, a bevy of waiters assist you from wine to dessert. It’s all an elaborate affair.

Here’s my review: don’t do it.

Well, do it if you only want the honor of saying you’ve been to Club 33. Don’t do it, if you’re into fine dining. There are two restaurants in Downtown Disney (outside of the theme park) that have better service and extraordinary food. Steakhouse 55 is one and Catal is the other. These establishments offer a better dining experience and, best of all, a reservation list that is open today.
