I don’t know about your shower, but mine has lime deposits. These white, scaly little nasties are the bane of my cleaning experience. Sure there are half a dozen lime removers on the market, but I’m not allowed to use them because the stone in this shower hasn’t been sealed properly. Besides this, I’m a little adverse to using chemicals in the house. I’d rather find a natural solution to the problem before I resort to something that may make me ill.
It seems that anyone I tell this story to has advice to give; whether it’s some homegrown cleanser or a new product they’ve heard about. Some have told me that the fault is with the city’s municipal water source; there’s nothing I can do. The television tells me that I need to buy something new. The internet overwhelms me with search-engine results. The suggestions are deposited on my brain with every hour I spend in front of the computer and television. I haven’t forgot a single one yet.
I’ve also experimented. My most recent experiment involved a mixture of water and vinegar to clean the lime. I mixed roughly half of each in a bottle and, over the course of five days, sprayed the glass of the shower stall to let the vinegar soak in and dissolve the lime away. This seemed to have worked on the glass but it hasn’t with the stone.
I’m not sure what to do at this point other than live with the predicament like I did with the plumbing, or wait for science to solve my problem. This is usually my modus operandi when it comes to domestic issues that have failed two dozen corrective attempts. I can claim victory over the glass but not over the entire problem. There’s some modicum of dignity in that, isn’t there?
A science professor I knew once said, “Chemistry is all around us.” I wish she could tell me what her suggestion would be. I could add it to the many on my brain, and when I’ve had enough I could sniff some vinegar and hope not only for a clear answer but a clean one too.
