It is time for me to say something short about blogging and the egos behind web logs (blogs). Here I make no exemption to what I state. I, too, am guilty of some of these assertions. I sit on no pedestal.
Some would say that a blogger must have a very large ego. After all, a blog is sort of a soapbox where an individual(s) can write about anything that she (or he) feels with the goal that others will notice. Take a read around! Most of the blogs on the internet are out there to post opinion on a host of topics: politics, shopping, entertainment, etc. The most successful blogs evoke deep feelings; deep enough to elicit many responses. More responses equal more attention for the blog and, by extension, the blogger.
What is a blog?
BLOG: a Web site on which an individual or a group of users produces an ongoing narrative —Oxford American Dictionary
Some forums on the internet are informative, do-it-yourself, postings that bring individuals together to solve a problem. But let’s not confuse the blog with these types of websites. People respond to the issue and help the requestor discover a solution. This may begin as a narrative but once the solution is reached the narrative is completed. It may not be considered ongoing so it may not be considered a blog.
So what of the blog? Does ego play a part in its perpetuation?
I believe ego does play a part in a blog’s creation and impetus. After all, it’s the ego of the creator and/or the writer that drives the blog toward notoriety or financial gain, but the purpose is based in a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance (the ego).
I guess what I am saying is that the ego of a blogger may be a bit larger than the ego of the non-blogger. Why? The bogger seeks more attention than the non-blogger.
Blogs are important ways in which we can connect to one another, and the number of visible egos may be growing larger thanks to them. As more egos clamber for that fifteen minutes of fame, some will shirk etiquette; others will scream for our attentions. Yet one thing is clear: nowhere is our ego connection greater than when we begin to read and write our first blogs.
